Janet Del Valle, PMHNP-BC, Joins UGL’s Sawyer Family Health Center

GWINN, MI – Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center (UGL) welcomes Janet Del Valle, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), to their team of Behavioral Health providers at the Sawyer Family Health Center.

Del Valle was born and raised in Lansing, MI, and is the third of four daughters. Growing up her family spent summers in a cabin on a wooded lake in northern Lower Michigan where she and her sisters still gather with their families. This inspired her preference for rural communities.

Del Valle met her husband their first weekend at Michigan State University and they married five years later. They lived up and down the east coast for 10 years while Janet’s husband was in the United States Marine Corps. She did much of her nurse training in Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital. Their daughter, now 27, was born while her husband was overseas in the First Gulf War. Janet’s experiences led to a special interest in serving veterans to promote their mental health.

Del Valle’s passion in nursing practice is supporting those with brain injuries and other neurological conditions and working with them toward healing and happiness. She has been honored to know many on that journey for the past three decades. Del Valle is the new U.P. contact person for the Brain Injury Association of Michigan. She also serves patients with other mental health diagnoses as they seek and achieve recovery. “Individualized care that starts with listening to patients and those close to them is key in providing support. Everyone experiences things differently and every patient gives me clues about how to be helpful to them. It is a partnership,” says Del Valle, “Giving information to patients, families and communities is a huge part of this process.” She teaches Mental Health First Aid USA to decrease stigma and prevent suicide.

Janet fell in love with the U.P. when she was assigned to cover the entire area for several years as a nurse care manager. It involved much driving in all sorts of weather, but each time she crossed the bridge headed north, she felt at home. In late 2016, Janet’s husband was offered a transfer to Marquette and they accepted gladly. He is now the district manager for Michigan Rehabilitation Services, the state’s vocational rehabilitation agency, which assists individuals with disabilities to find employment. What Janet loves most about the U.P. are the people. She finds them to be kind, dependable and authentic, which are the human characteristics she values most. She also loves the weather, wildlife, natural spaces and clean air.

Janet loves all animals (she has 4 cats) and enjoys reading, music (voice, piano and violin) and yoga.

UGL’s Sawyer Family Health Center is located at 301 Explorer Street, Gwinn, MI. To schedule an appointment with Janet Del Valle, PMHNP-BC, or one of UGL’s other providers at KI Sawyer, call 906-346-9275.
