GWINN, MI – Melissa Hinkhouse, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), has joined the team of behavioral health providers at Upper Great Lakes Sawyer Family Health Center (UGL).
Melissa has been a part of the behavioral health team at UGL since 2015. She received her Certificate of Licensed Practical Nursing from Northern Michigan University in 2015, followed by her Associate of Applied Science degree in 2018. Then, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Northern Michigan University in 2019 and recently earned her Master of Science in Nursing – Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree from Walden University. She is looking forward to continuing to work at UGL providing exceptional health care services for all people regardless of their ability to pay. Melissa says, “Mental health care should not be something a person needs to budget for; it is a need in life and is equally as important as physical health care. It is the same in the aspect that both are necessary for quality of life.”
Looking forward, Melissa is passionate about helping people with all behavioral health needs regardless of age, race, or gender. She believes that getting our youth and families involved in behavioral health services and guiding them to develop coping skills and utilize different treatment options, when necessary, will give adolescents the tools they need to thrive as successful adults.
During her free time, Melissa enjoys camping with her husband and children at their family’s camp on the lake or taking their RV on the road. She and her family always watch their beloved Green Bay Packers in the fall and winter. Melissa’s husband, children, and family have been an amazing support system to her throughout her journey of becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner; they have been her source of encouragement when she struggled and succeeded.
