Upper Great Lakes Family Health is thrilled to welcome Shelby Owens, MD, to our team! Dr. Owens is accepting new patients for primary care at our Lake Linden Family Health Center.
Dr. Owens grew up on a small farm in Hope, Michigan, just north of Midland. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences with minors in Biology and Anthropology from Grand Valley State University in 2016. In 2020, she graduated from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, where she also completed the Rural Community Health Certificate Program in Traverse City and Alpena, and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society.
Dr. Owens went on to complete her Family Medicine Residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, serving as co-chief resident in her final year. She is Board Certified in Family Medicine.
Dr. Owens is passionate about mental health, women’s health, and office procedures. She also brings training in point-of-care ultrasound.
Dr. Owens remains active in medical leadership, serving on the Member Engagement Committee and Advocacy Committee of the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians. In addition, she serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor for MSU College of Human Medicine. Her leadership and advocacy have been recognized with honors including the Dr. Robert F. Avant Resident Leadership Award and the Mayo Clinic Above and Beyond Award.
Outside the clinic, Dr. Owens enjoys singing, playing guitar, songwriting, hiking, and acting. She’s looking forward to cross-country skiing this winter and has a personal goal of performing in a musical. She also enjoys playing Pokémon Go with her husband.
