With over 17 clinics located across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center (UGL), has become a vital source of high-quality, accessible care for communities throughout the region. This strong and growing system of care was built under the leadership of founding CEO Don Simila, who retired on July 1 after more than 16 years of service. To lead the organization into the next phase of service and growth, the UGL Board of Directors appointed Trevor Hodges as its new Chief Executive Officer.

“The Board of Directors is deeply grateful for Don Simila’s unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of Upper Peninsula communities,” said Julie Shaw, Chair of the UGL Board. “His legacy is a thriving system of care built on expanding access to healthcare in rural areas and fostering deep, community-centered relationships. Above all, Don has championed the dedicated providers, nurses, and staff whose teamwork and passion are the true heart of UGL’s success. As we look forward, Trevor Hodges is the right leader to uphold and grow our commitment to improving the health of people and communities across the Upper Peninsula. Trevor, who has been working with Don and the management team for over 10 years, not only brings deep organizational experience, but also a strong connection to the region and a clear passion for supporting the entire UGL team in serving the people of the U.P.”

Hodges is a native of Calumet, Michigan and brings extensive experience in healthcare administration to his new role as UGL CEO. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Michigan Technological University and a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Des Moines University. Over the past decade, Trevor has held several key leadership positions within UGL, including Chief Financial Officer and most recently Associate Director. Beyond his internal leadership roles, Trevor has supported national FQHC advancement through consultative work with peer organizations and active involvement with the Michigan Primary Care Association and the National Association of Community Health Centers. His commitment to community-first healthcare and strategic insights positions him to successfully guide UGL into its next chapter — one that will continue to rely on and uplift the exceptional teamwork of its clinical and operational staff.

Hodges expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to lead UGL forward. “I’m honored to lead this incredible team and continue building on the strong foundation Don and so many others have laid,” said Hodges. “UGL is more than a healthcare provider — it’s a network of people who care deeply about the health of their neighbors. I’m excited to help grow our community-based care and continue UGL’s commitment to every community we serve.”

Don Simila’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center into the trusted, community-focused health system it is today. Since the organization’s founding in 2009, Don’s vision and dedication have driven UGL’s growth from a single planning grant into one of the region’s most comprehensive Federally Qualified Health Centers, now operating over 17 clinics across the Upper Peninsula. His tireless advocacy for expanding access to quality healthcare and his commitment to fostering strong community partnerships have left a lasting impact on the health and well-being of thousands of residents. “Don’s passion for making healthcare better and easier to access for the people of the Upper Peninsula has truly transformed our communities,” adds Julie Shaw. “We are profoundly grateful for the positive difference he has made in so many lives. His legacy will continue to inspire us all!”

Simila reflected on his time at UGL with humility and deep appreciation. “UGL has never been about me,” said Simila. “It’s about love, kindness, and delivering excellent care that people truly need. I’ve had the privilege of working with many compassionate, committed people who came together to build something truly special. I’m so proud of all of them.”

Upper Great Lakes Family Health (UGL) has 17 clinical locations in the Upper Peninsula dedicated to providing high-quality medical, dental, and behavioral health to people in our rural communities, regardless of their ability to pay.
