UGL’s Gwinn Family Health Center Welcomes Ericka Distefano, NP

Ericka Distefano

GWINN, MI – Ericka Distefano, Nurse Practitioner and Licensed Acupuncturist, has joined the team of family medicine providers at Upper Great Lakes Gwinn Family Health Center (UGL).

Ericka grew up in Gwinn and continues to live in the area with her husband, Giovanni. Ericka has always known she would into the medical field. When she was younger, she would flip through her aunt’s books on the human body and be fascinated by the pictures with overlays showing the skeleton, muscles, and organs. She has relatives who were in the nursing field and her grandmother has played an important role in her life as she was a nurse and interested in alternative medicine.

While Ericka originally planned on attending medical school, her path changed once she heard about acupuncture school. She and her grandmother visited a school campus where Ericka learned more about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and from then on, she knew it was what she wanted to do. Ericka received her Bachelor of Science in Biology Degree from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan, and then both her Bachelor of Science in TCM Nutrition Degree and her Master of Science in Oriental Medicine Degree from the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.

Ericka went on to practice TCM in Marquette for years and then decided to get her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan, to enhance her education with the long-term goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner. After receiving her Master of Science in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner Degree from Loyola University New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana, Ericka has achieved her goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner and looks forward to providing integrated healthcare in her hometown. Ericka says, “I enjoy combining my studies as a Nurse Practitioner with my TCM background and am especially interested in treating fibromyalgia, anxiety, and pain with acupuncture.”

During her free time, Ericka enjoys traveling, cross country skiing, mountain biking, and exploring the outdoors.
