GWINN, MI – Leah Abbott, MD, has joined the team of family medicine providers at Upper Great Lakes Gwinn Family Health Center (UGL).
Dr. Abbott is originally from Southeastern Michigan and grew up in Wyandotte, MI, a town about halfway between Detroit and Toledo. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology degree from Wayne State University in Detroit and then her Doctor of Medicine degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. Dr. Abbott moved to the U.P. to complete her family medicine residency in Marquette and in the process, she and her husband fell in love with the area and people.
Dr. Abbott looks forward to developing strong care relationships with her patients and caring for people throughout all stages of their lives. In addition to being board certified in Family Medicine, she is fellowship trained and board eligible in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Palliative Medicine is a specialty that focuses on the care and treatment of people with serious and chronic illnesses and aims to improve quality of life through symptom management and advance care planning. Dr. Abbott says, “I hope to expand community knowledge of Palliative Medicine and Hospice and Advance Care Planning. I am especially looking forward to providing care to patients in their home settings including nursing homes and assisted living centers.” Dr. Abbott also performs women’s health services including Pap smears, IUD placement and removal, and Nexplanon placement and removal.
“I consider being a doctor a true privilege. People meet me as a complete stranger and welcome me into their lives and homes, often when they are at their most vulnerable. That is a gift that I will always treasure,” says Dr. Abbott.
Outside of the office, Dr. Abbott and her husband enjoy hiking, kayaking, camping, and traveling. Dr. Abbott enjoys reading books of all kinds but especially mystery and suspense novels.
